Fire Alarm Systems

Course Number: FAS-001

Course Description: This 4-day (28 contact hours), hands-on workshop provides students with in-depth instruction on how fire alarm systems operate, what to look for during troubleshooting, and an overview of NFPA 72 and NFPA 70 requirements for system layout and installs.  The course material includes various system diagrams to help students visualize how the system operates during normal operation, trouble conditions, and alarm conditions.  The course concludes with hands-on lab work with fire alarm systems from different manufacturers.  Each lab has learning objectives that must be met by the students.

Course Topics Include:

    Fire alarm system components

Fire alarm circuits (per NFPA 72, Chapter 12)

Fire alarm system concept of operations

    Circuit troubleshooting

    Detector spacing and location exercises

Notification appliance spacing and location exercises

    Battery and voltage drop calculations

    System layout exercises

Hands-on labs with fire alarm system trainers

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the qualified individual will gain a greater understanding of fire alarm systems from the individual components that make up a fire alarm system to how the systems react during a given scenario.  This course will allow the student to identify the diverse types of automatic fire detectors, their operating principles, capabilities, and limitations so that the student will be able to identify areas where the devices may or may not be located as well as identify potential issues in the design or testing phases.  In addition, using the knowledge gained from this course, students will have a greater understanding on how to perform layout, system calculations, wire the circuits, and troubleshoot fire alarm systems.
